Elysium Health is a company that specializes in the production of supplements that help basic human functions be more effective. It was created by two businessmen and Dr. Leonard Guarente, who works at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as its Director of the Glenn Laboratory for the Science of Aging. Elysium Health focuses entirely on proactive health, rather than reacting to health problems like many supplements and medicines do.
Basis, the primary offering of Elysium Health, is a supplement designed to increase levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide – also called NAD+ throughout this article – in the human body, a substance that is found naturally in most microorganisms on planet earth.
What exactly is Basis?
Basis is a supplement that contains two primary ingredients: nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene.
Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide – long for NAD+, as detailed above – and works more effectively in the presence of pterostilbene. Pterostilbene doesn’t have a direct effect on cells or other microorganisms in the human body, although it does allow NAD+ to work more effectively.
What about nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide?
To be more specific, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide has two isotopes. One of these isotopes has two extra electrons, also called oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. This is the type that’s found more frequently throughout the body, and also does more for the body than its more positively-charged counterpart. Seeing as this isotope has a higher charge than its other form, it’s also called NAD+ – hence the plus sign.
As such, nicotinamide riboside is designed specifically to yield high concentrations of NAD+.
Nicotinamide riboside, when described simply, is a type of vitamin B3. In nature, this compound is found in yeast cells.
What does pterostilbene do?
As detailed above, pterostilbene helps NAD+ do its job more effectively. It is found in nature in blueberries, a handful of other berries, almonds, and the stem and leaf of grape vines. Pterostilbene is technically referred to as a stilbenoid, and is related to the compound resveratrol. The compound is found in nature in plants, where it defends against stressors in plants’ immediate environments.
Pterostilbene helps the body create sirtuins, proteins that regulate cell function. When sirtuins are found in high concentrations, NAD+ performs its job more effectively.
How does Elysium Health actually know Basis works, and is legitimate?
Many supplements claim to do this, that, and the third, although their claims often aren’t up to par.
Elysium Health financed Basis’ way through a clinical trial set to United States Food and Drug Administration standards. Its findings indicated that after four weeks of taking one tablet’s worth of ingredients every day, NAD+ concentrations flew upwards 40%. Taking twice that amount, as Elysium recommends, boosted NAD+ concentrations up 90%.
